Alemayehu Wassie Eshete (PhD)

Dr. Alemayehu Wassie is an internationally distinguished scholar and one of Ethiopia's most respected and prolific authors. He attended Alemaya University of Agriculture (now Haramaya University), where he earned a degree in Forestry in 1992. He then joined the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection as a forestry expert, soon rising to head of the district (Woreda) office. In 1995, he moved to the Ministry of Agriculture, and from 1996 to 2000 he worked for the NGO Food for the Hungry International, serving as Head of Afforestation in Ethiopia. He has since worked for the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA) in several capacities — as Forest Development Project Coordinator, Head of the Planning and Programming Department, and, since January 2019, as Executive Director. Dr. Alemayehu holds an MSc in Forestry from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and earned his PhD in 2007 from the Forest Ecology and Forest Management (FEM) group of the Centre for Ecosystem Studies at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. His doctoral research focused on the role of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido churches in conserving forest biodiversity. In addition to his far-reaching administrative responsibilities, Dr. Alemayehu serves as a board member and adjunct professor at Bahir Dar University, where he has mentored dozens of Ethiopian graduate and undergraduate students. Since 2005, he has collaborated with numerous international universities to advance the study of church forests and raise global awareness of their importance. As a prominent member of the Ethiopian academic community, he represents an indispensable component of the research team. Beyond his academic work, Dr. Alemayehu is an accomplished literary writer. He has published several acclaimed mystic novels in Amharic — እመጓ(Emegua), ዝጎራ(Ziguara), መርበብት(Merbebit), ሰበዝ(Sebez), ሚተራሊዮን(Miteralion), ችቦ(Chibo), and ፍካሬ(Fikarie) — through which many readers have come to appreciate his gifted storytelling. He is also the author of the academic book Ethiopian Orthodox Church Forests: Opportunities and Challenges for Restoration.
